We should be plain about what a certificate reference is worth on its own: not much. A reference number is not a test report. We asked for the report and it was not published to us, so the reference is all we can print.
What a Horse Honey certificate of analysis would tell you
A certificate of analysis is a laboratory document tied to a batch. A useful one names the laboratory, gives the test dates, states what was tested for and prints the results against specifications.
On this product there is one test we would most like to see, and it is the test that would make the whole label readable: the amount of each of the eight ingredients in the blend. A certificate that broke 1,200 mg into eight figures would answer, in one page, every question this site has had to leave open.
The second thing worth having is identity, confirming that each botanical is the species the label names. Sarsaparilla, in particular, is a name shared by several unrelated plants, and the panel does at least name a species for it.
The third is purity. Heavy metals and microbial contamination matter on any product built from dried plant material, and this one is eight of them plus bovine tissue.

Why a minute of checking is worth it
Most people open a supplement bottle without looking at it, and most of the time nothing is wrong. The checks on this page are cheap insurance against the times when something is.
A safety seal is the one check with no grey area. It exists so that you can tell whether anybody has been into the bottle between the factory and your hand. If it is damaged or missing, the bottle goes back, and no other consideration outranks that.

None of these proves a bottle genuine on its own. Several of them failing at once is a reason to stop and call the order desk before taking anything.
